The Sorby Nano Investigation Centre is a partner to the Mercury Centre, contributing to the industrially focussed materials testing and sample analysis expertise the centre offers.
The Sorby Nano Investigation Centre offers a full range of cost effective micro and nano scale investigation capabilities, under the directorship of Professor Mark Rainforth, an international expert in material science and engineering we have a dedicated team to meet the needs of your business.
We use the latest optical and electron microscopy techniques, capable of analysing the most demanding materials.

The Sorby Nano Centre, combined with the Mercury Centre, offers an extensive microscopy suite which encompasses the latest world leading optical and electron microscopes capable of analysing a wide range of samples. The following facilities are available for use by companies:
- Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM)
- Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM)
- Optical Microscopes
- X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS)
- Glow discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy (GDOES)
- Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM)
The Sorby Nano Investigation Centre was originally created as a joint venture between The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University (part funded by the ERDF) to offer industry a single point of access to the most powerful microscopes and leading experts in nanotechnology for the purpose of improving the development of innovative products and processes for a wide range of technological developments.
The Sorby Nano Investigation Centre continues this work and also provides the materials characterisation capability to the Mercury Centre.
